The Rehoboth Beach boardwalk is a place that was a source of constant joy for me in my childhood. I have many happy memories of spending days with my Grandfather there. When he passed, it was a place that I visited often to feel closer to him. The boardwalk was crowned by an enormous orange Dolles Candyland sign, promising salt water taffy, lemonade, and other treats. One Christmas, it was announced that the business would be moving from the spot, and the sign with it. It felt like the end of an era, and it felt like the end of childhood. I visited the place one last time. It was around Christmas, cold and quiet.
The only thing promised to us in this life is change.
The sign is still up, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum, off the boardwalk.
